Set within an elegant nine unit boutique building in the heart of Back Bay, this penthouse was completely transformed to reflect the client’s passion for art, books and meaningful collections. With three exposures and notably high ceilings, the residence offered extraordinary architectural potential which we unlocked through a series of tailored design interventions.

Custom cabinetry became central to the vision. We designed expansive eleven foot high joinery that frames the main living areas and provides both open display and concealed storage. These installations were crafted to sit seamlessly within the architecture and to showcase the client’s collection while grounding the home with warmth and intention. Additional bespoke millwork includes an extensive bookcase designed specifically for the space along with custom kitchen cabinetry.

Natural materials were layered throughout the interior including oak paneling and doors, a walnut mantel and neutral flooring. These understated elements create a calm visual envelope for the vibrant and eclectic art, books and collected objects that animate the rooms. The contrast between the refined architectural backdrop and the expressive personal pieces gives the home its distinctive character.

The renovation extended to the sizable roof deck, elevating outdoor living in a way that complements the interior experience. The completed penthouse is both elegant and personal, a sophisticated city residence that celebrates the client’s interests while embracing the charm of its Back Bay setting.

The project was recognised with a Chrysalis award for a Residential Interior as well as three Honorable Mentions at the IDA Prizes, a reflection of the thoughtful craftsmanship and cohesive design that define the home.
